Andal was born as the incarnation of Bhu-ma Devi in the garden of Periyazhvar @ Vishnu Chiththar, under a Tulasi plant. Periyazhvar took her and took care of her as his own daughter. Not surprisingly, Periyazhvar's love for Sri Krishna and listening to the Lord’s stories from her father from childhood, his love for Sri Krishna entrenched in the heart of Andal and she developed great love for Sri Krishna even at a tender age. Standing strong on her decision of marrying only the Lord, Aandal, won the heart of Lord Sriman Narayana and got married to Lord Sri Ranganathar.
She has given two great works which are part of the 4000 Divya Prabandhams – Thiruppavai and Nachchiyar Thirumozhi. Through both, she declared her surrender to the Lord and that she would not belong to any other.
Her first work is Thiruppavai, a collection of 30 verses in which Aandal imagines herself as a Gopika (cowherd girl) born during the era of Lord Krishna, with an unconditional devotion and love to Lord Krishna. It is said that Thiruppavai is considered as “The Nectar of Vedas” and teaches philosophical values, moral values, ethical values, pure love, devotion, dedication, single-minded aim, virtues, and the ultimate goal of life. It is said that when Aandal proposed Thiruppavai, she was 5 years old!!!
Her second work is Nachiyar Thirumozhi, a poem of 143 verses. "Thirumozhi" literally means "Sacred Sayings" in a Tamil poetic style and "Nachiyar" means Goddess. Therefore, the title means "Sacred Sayings of the Goddess." This poem fully reveals Aandal's intense longing for Lord Vishnu, the Divine Beloved. Utilizing classical Tamil poetic conventions and interspersing stories from the Vedas and Puranas, Aandal creates imagery that is possibly unparalleled in the whole gamut of Indian religious literature.
